Vipingo Gets Expanded Community Support from Bamburi

Bamburi Cement Plc has launched a solar-powered borehole and handed over two new classrooms in Vipingo, Kilifi County, in a move aimed at improving access to clean water and education for local residents.

The projects, commissioned on October 14, 2026, will provide water for household use, livestock and small gardens while helping the community avoid fuel and electricity costs associated with pumping water.

Bamburi Cement Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Ndugwa officially launched the borehole and handed over the classrooms at Bureni School. The event brought together Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga, the area Member of County Assembly, the Assistant County Commissioner, a Ministry of Education representative, the area chief, village elders and members of Bamburi’s Executive Committee.

Speaking during the handover, Ndugwa said the latest investment followed requests from the community to expand learning facilities at Bureni School to accommodate Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8 learners.

“When the community decided to expand Bureni school to include Grade 6, it again reached out to Bamburi,” Ndugwa said.

He noted that Bamburi built a Grade 6 classroom and donated a water tank last year. This year, the company added two classrooms for Grade 7 and Grade 8, equipping them with lockers and seats to provide learners with a comfortable environment for their studies.

The new facilities are part of a wider partnership between Bamburi Cement and the Vipingo community that began in 2023. Other initiatives include education sponsorship for 16 students, two free medical camps, a sanitation and hygiene programme, grading community access roads, and continued donations of firewood and murram.

The projects are identified through consultations with local leaders and residents, allowing the company to respond to the needs raised by the people living in its host communities.

The solar-powered borehole is expected to offer a more affordable way of accessing water by reducing reliance on fuel and electricity. The additional classrooms will also help provide learning space for pupils as Bureni School expands to accommodate higher grades.

Bamburi Cement said its community initiatives focus on working with residents to develop lasting solutions that support their daily needs and improve their quality of life.

The latest handover strengthens the company’s ongoing engagement with Vipingo residents, with investments spanning education, water access, healthcare, sanitation and local infrastructure.
