Airtel Kenya Extends Scholarship Support to Keep Mukuru Learners in School

Airtel Kenya, through the Airtel Africa Foundation, has renewed its scholarship partnership with Mukuru Promotion Centre (MPC) to support vulnerable learners from Mukuru informal settlement to access and complete secondary education.

Under the renewed agreement, 22 students from St. Michael’s Secondary School will receive full tuition sponsorship from 2026 to 2028, ensuring they continue their studies without financial barriers.

Since the scholarship programme began in 2017, Airtel Kenya has supported more than 190 students, helping reduce school dropout risks and creating opportunities for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Speaking during the partnership renewal ceremony, Airtel Kenya Managing Director Ashish Malhotra said education remains a key driver of social and economic transformation.

“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and unlocking opportunity. Through this partnership, we are investing in the potential of young people and giving them the support they need to stay in school and pursue their ambitions,” said Malhotra.

Beyond tuition support, Airtel Kenya employees have continued to support girls at St. Michael’s Secondary School through menstrual health initiatives, including the provision of sanitary pads to promote school attendance and dignity among learners.

St. Michael’s Secondary School was established in 2008 by Mukuru Promotion Centre to provide quality secondary education to children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements with an estimated population of 700,000 residents.

The scholarship initiative is part of the Airtel Africa Foundation’s FEED sustainability strategy, which focuses on financial inclusion, education, environmental sustainability and digital inclusion across Africa.
