How Kamwaki Estate Reflect NCBA’s Climate Action Commitment

NCBA Group marked World Environment Day 2026 at Kamwaki Coffee Estate in Kiambu County, explaining that the venue was selected to demonstrate sustainability in action beyond tree-planting figures.

The bank said the engagement reflects how long-term environmental commitments, strategic partnerships and community participation can deliver tangible environmental and socio-economic impact.

The initiative, implemented with Boreka Group and other stakeholders, brought together farmers, conservation partners, community members and NCBA leadership under the global theme of environmental restoration.

Positioning NCBA as a sustainability and ESG leader

According to NCBA, the event reinforces its position as a sustainability-conscious institution embedding environmental responsibility into its business operations. The bank added that it continues to advance ESG-driven banking by supporting sustainable development through both financing and on-the-ground environmental action.

It also highlighted its role as a purpose-driven partner working with communities and stakeholders to create shared value, while turning sustainability commitments into measurable and verifiable outcomes.

NCBA’s sustainability journey and impact

Since launching its 15 Sustainability Commitments in 2023, the bank has supported the growth of more than 1.4 million trees, mobilised KES 9.5 billion in green and sustainable financing, achieved an annual waste recycling rate of 83.59 per cent, and established six electric vehicle charging stations across the region.

These initiatives have collectively impacted more than 1.2 million livelihoods through sustainability and community programmes. The Group continues to work towards its long-term ambition of growing 10 million trees by 2030 while expanding climate resilience efforts across East Africa.

Measurable environmental and climate impact

NCBA emphasised that its programme is designed to ensure impact goes beyond planting to long-term ecosystem restoration. The initiative currently records a 75 per cent seedling survival rate, reflecting strong emphasis on nurturing and sustaining tree growth.

Since 2023, trees planted through the partnership have already sequestered an estimated 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂). Over the next 20 years, they are projected to remove more than 765,000 tonnes of CO₂, demonstrating the power of nature-based solutions in climate mitigation.

Together with Boreka Group, NCBA is restoring ecosystems through 35 indigenous tree species supported by agroforestry practices involving farmers and local communities.

Why Kamwaki Estate matters

However, NCBA said Kamwaki Coffee Estate was chosen because it represents an integrated model of environmental conservation and economic productivity. Located in Kiambu County’s established coffee-growing region, the estate is linked to river systems such as the Kamiti River and features rolling hills and valleys that support indigenous tree planting and conservation activities.

The estate demonstrates how sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration can coexist within productive landscapes. Its coffee farming ecosystem reflects agroforestry principles, showing the strong link between healthy ecosystems, resilient agriculture and sustainable livelihoods.

NCBA added that Kamwaki Estate is more than a venue—it is a practical demonstration of the type of environmental and economic model the bank seeks to scale through its sustainability agenda across the region.
