Airtel Africa has successfully completed data and messaging testing of satellite-powered mobile connectivity in Kenya in partnership with SpaceX, marking a major milestone in expanding digital access across the continent.
Breakthrough in Satellite-to-Mobile Connectivity
The testing involved the use of Starlink Mobile in areas with no terrestrial network coverage. In these remote locations, the service was seamlessly activated, enabling 4G-compatible smartphones to connect directly to Starlink’s growing constellation of over 650 satellites.
This innovation allows users to remain connected even in previously unreachable regions, offering a glimpse into the future of mobile connectivity in Africa.
Successful Performance in Remote Areas
During the testing phase, the satellite-powered connection supported a range of light-data applications. Users were able to access services such as WhatsApp for calls and messaging, navigation tools like maps, and communication platforms such as Facebook Messenger.
Additionally, the test demonstrated the capability to carry out financial transactions via the Airtel app, underscoring the potential of the technology to support essential services in underserved areas.
Airtel Africa Signals Expansion Plans
Speaking on the development, Sunil Taldar said the milestone reflects the company’s commitment to bridging the digital divide.
“We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX. This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access,” he said.
He added that integrating Starlink Mobile technology would ensure customers stay connected even beyond traditional network coverage.

Next Phase: Voice and Broadband Capabilities
Following the successful tests in Kenya, Airtel Africa and SpaceX plan to expand the service across Airtel’s 14 African markets, subject to regulatory approvals.
The next phase will involve deploying enhanced capabilities using Starlink Mobile V2, which is expected to support voice calling and deliver broadband internet directly to mobile devices.
Bridging Africa’s Connectivity Gap
The collaboration signals a transformative shift in Africa’s telecommunications landscape, particularly for rural and remote communities where traditional infrastructure remains limited.
By leveraging satellite technology, Airtel Africa and SpaceX aim to unlock new economic opportunities, improve access to digital services, and accelerate financial inclusion across the continent.
