Security agencies in the coastal region have ordered the Orma and Degodia communities to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms, following violent clashes last year over livestock grazing and water access that left more than 14 people dead.
So far, the Degodia community has handed over five guns, while the Orma have surrendered six.
Deputy County Commissioner for Tana River, Joseph Kipkorir, warned that the government would not hesitate to use force once the amnesty period ends. Officials have blamed poorly guarded borders and unprotected terrain in neighboring areas for the illegal arms inflow.
Deputy Sub-County Commissioner for North Tana, Ezekiel Amonde, added that authorities have already identified individuals in possession of the firearms. Elders from both communities have pledged to support the government in the disarmament exercise.
Officials say the success of this initiative is crucial for restoring lasting peace in Tana River County.
