Safaricom, in partnership with taxi-hailing companies and key industry stakeholders, has hosted a Drivers and Riders Festival aimed at empowering Kenya’s mobility workforce and enabling drivers and riders to maximise their earnings and well-being.
The event, held as part of the broader Shangwe @25 celebrations marking Safaricom’s 25 years of impact and innovation, brought together more than 200 participants, including cab drivers, boda boda riders, taxi-hailing firms and partners such as DTB Bank, Turaco, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Centonomy and Vivo Energy Kenya.
Participants benefited from a range of support services, including health check-ups, vehicle diagnostic checks, financial advisory sessions and partner-led engagements designed to address the everyday needs of workers in the transport sector.
Safaricom Chief Consumer Business Officer Fawzia Ali Kimanthi said drivers and riders play a critical role in keeping Kenya’s cities moving, underscoring the company’s commitment to supporting them through tailored solutions. “Drivers and riders form the backbone of Kenya’s mobility ecosystem. Through Bundle Ya Deree and Ofa Ya Boda, we are offering solutions that keep them connected, safeguard their well-being and enhance their financial security,” she said.
Bundle Ya Deree offers integrated value bundles ranging from KES 500 weekly to KES 2,000 monthly, combining data and voice minutes with subsidised insurance. The cover includes inpatient benefits of up to KES 30,000, funeral cover of KES 100,000 and accident reimbursement of KES 15,000, alongside weekly fuel discounts of KES 2 per litre every Friday at Shell stations nationwide.
For boda boda riders, Ofa Ya Boda provides flexible plans priced between KES 50 and KES 1,000. The offering includes data, Kredo, free access to rider apps and Google Maps, as well as subsidised insurance options tailored to the needs of motorcycle riders. Safaricom said the propositions are designed to deliver affordability, reliability and essential protection within the mobility ecosystem.
Drivers welcomed the initiative, noting its practical impact on their work. “Staying connected and protected is essential for us. Bundle Ya Deree has made a real difference, especially the data and insurance support,” said Raphael Masica, a Nairobi-based cab driver. “Safaricom coming to us and listening to our challenges shows they truly understand our daily realities.”
Safaricom said the Drivers and Riders Festival is intended to deepen awareness and adoption of Bundle Ya Deree and Ofa Ya Boda, while reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to supporting the connectivity, safety and financial well-being of Kenya’s mobility workforce.
