Safaricom Ethiopia: Igniting Business Innovation within the Digital Boom of the Horn of Africa

2 Mins read

At the dawn of explosive economic growth in the nation, Safaricom Ethiopia is emerging as a key force for change in the way business gets done in light of Ethiopia’s ambitious digital agenda.

In just four years since securing its license, this telecom giant has crossed over 10 million 90-day active customers, further cementing its position in bridging gaps in connectivity and empowering entrepreneurs toward sustainable scaling.

Not only is it expanding access, but Safaricom is equally redefining commerce with innovative financial and digital tools crafted for small and medium enterprises, with daily net additions averaging 31,000 users.

At the core of this empowerment is Safaricom’s flagship mobile money platform, M-PESA, which has transformed transactions in the heavy cash-based economy of Ethiopia. Today, businesses can purchase stock through cashless payments, receive digital proof of purchase, and build credit scores, all integrated into their daily operations.

This shift from informal dealings to traceable and efficient systems has unlocked new revenue streams for merchants, wholesalers, and retailers alike. “M-PESA isn’t just a payment tool; it’s a gateway to financial inclusion that allows Ethiopian businesses to dream bigger

It’s alliances like these that are empowering both consumers and enterprises alike, fostering a world where insurance services reach underserved markets free from the friction of traditional banking.

Safaricom’s infrastructure backbone ensures reliable connectivity for business-critical applications through an investment of over 300 billion ETB in a 4G network spanning 3,141 sites across more than 150 towns, approximately USD 2.27 billion.

At present, this network encompasses more than half of the population and ramped up mobile data subscriptions to 7.1 million subscribers, where average monthly consumption jumped 53% to 6.5GB per user. For SMEs, that equates to real-time inventory management, enabling e-commerce, and cloud collaborations, all aligned with Ethiopia’s Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda.

The flagship initiative is the SME Web Acceleration program, which started this year, where partners are invited to co-develop innovative, affordable, and scalable digital solutions integrated with M-PESA and Google platforms.

It targets the backbone of the economy, where SMEs contribute 40% of GDP, in efforts to digitise operations for thousands of micro-entrepreneurs, from coffee exporters in Sidama up to textile weavers in Mekelle. This is complemented by TechStart, a nationwide training drive that equips 125,000 young Ethiopians with the latest digital and cloud skills, directly feeding a skilled workforce into burgeoning startups.

The ripple effects extend beyond tech: Safaricom’s operations have created 900 direct jobs, 97% of which are held by Ethiopians, and over 20,000 indirect roles through local distributors and subcontractors.

Through prospecting global investors, including those from the UK, the company is channelling funds into inclusive projects that amplify economic multipliers.

Community investments, over 100 million ETB in education and aid, further seal its commitment to all-around growth. With the digital economy in Ethiopia expected to contribute an additional $10 billion to GDP by 2028, Safaricom is well-positioned to lead in this revolution. “We’re building not just networks, but futures,” the company declares, reiterating its mission to change lives through innovation.

For businesses, this means thriving in a connected landscape where opportunity knows no bounds. Having its revenues double in recent quarters, Safaricom Ethiopia is proof that strategic telecom can drive a nation and its enterprise.
