More than 4,000 families in the Kihoto area of Naivasha, Nakuru County, have vowed not to leave their homes despite reports of an impending State-led eviction due to the rising waters of Lake Naivasha.
Tension is growing in the estate as residents accuse the government of failing to provide a clear resettlement or compensation plan even as flooding risks intensify. Many fear losing property they say was legally acquired and developed over decades.
Lakeview Ward Member of County Assembly Alex Mbugua condemned any move to evict residents without compensation, noting that many of those affected are business owners, civil servants and retirees who used lifelong savings to build their homes. He questioned why the State would disown land it once helped formalize through genuine title deeds and extensive public investments in roads, electricity and water infrastructure.
Mbugua urged the government to seek humane, lawful and consultative solutions, warning that forced evictions would deepen the humanitarian crisis already facing the community.
