Menengai Oilers Crowned Champions at 42nd Floodlit Rugby Tournament

1 Mins read

The Floodlit Rugby Tournament wrapped up this weekend at Impala Grounds, with the Menengai Oilers becoming the champions after a thrilling series of matches across all categories.

Safaricom, which has sponsored the tournament for over 10 consecutive years, allocated KES 1 million, underscoring its continued commitment to the growth of Kenyan rugby and sports talent. This decade-long partnership makes Safaricom one of the longest supporters of local rugby talent.

“As we mark 25 years of transforming lives through purpose and innovation, our partnership with Floodies reflects our belief in the power of sport to unite and inspire people in the communities. Rugby is always built on resilience, teamwork and excellence, and these are the values that continue to inspire how we serve our customers,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom.

This year’s edition attracted hundreds of fans over three weekends filled with high-energy rugby, entertainment and community engagements. It was also a platform for Safaricom to showcase its innovative products and services, including B-Live, 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) for home connectivity, Neon Smarta Devices, Lipa na M-PESA and Pochi La Biashara, demonstrating how technology continues to improve the everyday lives of Kenyans.

“The tournament has been successful, and I really want to thank all our sponsors, especially Safaricom, for introducing 5G routers that allowed fans to stream the games live. Our fans who could not attend in person were still able to cheer us on from home, which boosted our morale and performance,” said Samuel Asati.

The Floodlit Tournament has become a major event on Kenya’s rugby calendar, providing a platform for both experienced players and emerging talent. With Safaricom’s continued support, the tournament continues to grow and reinforces the company’s role in promoting sports and youth development across the country.

Safaricom also supported the event by awarding 5G routers to the winners during the prize-giving ceremony.
