Del Monte Kenya: Cultivating minds alongside pineapples

2 Mins read

Del Monte Kenya Limited, best known for its pineapple plantations in Thika and Murang’a, is quietly making an impact far beyond agriculture.

For decades, the company has been a driving force in educational development, providing infrastructure, resources, and mentorship to thousands of learners in central Kenya.

A Legacy rooted in education

The company’s educational journey began in 1960 with the establishment of Kihunguro Primary School, which has since educated over 3,000 students.

Over the years, Del Monte expanded its support to three additional primary schools and eight nursery schools, offering early childhood education to surrounding communities.

In 2010, Del Monte opened its own Del Monte Mixed Secondary School—the first community secondary school in Mitubiri Ward, Murang’a County. Together, these institutions have benefited over 12,000 students in just over a decade.

Beyond infrastructure: Holistic support

Del Monte Kenya’s involvement goes beyond building schools. The company provides free piped water, firewood for cooking, furnished staff offices, and covers electricity bills for supported institutions. Roads leading to the schools are maintained to ensure year-round access, and staff housing is provided for teachers and non-teaching personnel.

In addition, emergency medical services are available for students and teachers, with arrangements for hospital transfers when necessary. Career guidance sessions—often led by Del Monte staff—have inspired many students to pursue careers in agronomy, engineering, and other technical fields.

Support for neighbouring communities

The company’s initiatives extend to neighbouring communities such as Umoja, Gichagi, and Kilimambogo. Schools like Ndula Secondary in Ngoliba Ward have benefited from land donations and the provision of sanitary pads for female students to combat period poverty.

Principal Beatrice Wanjau of Ndula Secondary commended the company’s continued support, noting that it has significantly improved students’ welfare and access to education.

Investing in extracurricular development

Del Monte has also invested in sports and transport. Schools in the region have received basketball and volleyball courts, while Del Monte Mixed Secondary School was gifted a school bus to facilitate educational tours, sports activities, and other student programs.

“This bus has come in handy at a time when there are many activities requiring student transport,” said Principal George Wanyoike Ndung’u.

Aligned with global goals

Del Monte Kenya’s initiatives are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The company’s approach—addressing both academic and non-academic needs—has turned education into a tool for empowerment, sustainability, and social equity in Thika and Murang’a.

Investment in the future

Del Monte Kenya’s educational programs are more than corporate social responsibility; they are a long-term investment in the community’s future.

By nurturing young minds alongside its world-renowned pineapples, the company is planting seeds of knowledge and opportunity that will bear fruit for generations.
