Juan Lavista Ferres, CVP and Chief Data Scientist of Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab announced GIRAFFE (Generalized Image-based Re-Identification using AI for Fauna Feature Extraction) via a Microsoft On the Issues blog: Big Data for Big Animals:
How AI Is Helping Save Tanzania’s Endangered Giraffes. This innovative open-source AI tool is designed to help conservationists track and protect Tanzania’s endangered giraffe population by identifying individual giraffes based on unique spot patterns with over 90 percent accuracy.
The tool is already providing critical insights for conservationists to help stabilize key giraffe populations in the region: over the last 10 years, the Microsoft AI for Good Lab has collaborated with Wild Nature Institute in support of the Masai Giraffe Conservation Project to counter the population decline in giraffes.
Now available on GitHub, GIRAFFE is fast and accessible to scientists and field researchers without the need for coding skills. GIRAFFE is also scalable and can be used by conservationists working to monitor and protect any animal with unique visual identifiers, including zebras, tigers, whale sharks and more.
