President Ruto allocates 20pc of affordable housing units to uniform officers

President William Ruto has announced a bold new directive that sets aside 20 percent of all government-constructed affordable housing units for Kenya’s uniformed officers. This includes personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Police Service (NPS), the Kenya Prisons Service, and the National Youth Service (NYS).

The President made the announcement on Tuesday during the official launch of the Central Bank of Kenya Police Housing Complex located in the Industrial Area of Nairobi County.

Speaking at the event, President Ruto emphasized that the directive is part of his administration’s broader plan to provide long-term housing stability for security officers who have long faced challenges accessing decent and affordable accommodation, especially in major urban centres where housing costs remain high.

“Our uniformed officers are the cornerstone of our nation’s security and stability. It is only fitting that they are guaranteed decent housing that matches their critical service to our country,” said President Ruto.

The newly launched CBK Police Housing Complex is a product of a strategic partnership between the Central Bank of Kenya and the National Police Service through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The complex comprises 200 fully furnished two-bedroom apartments and 10 three-bedroom units designed to serve police officers attached to the CBK.

President Ruto praised the project as a model for future housing initiatives targeting uniformed services, noting that the government would also introduce flexible and subsidized home financing options under the affordable housing programme to support officers in acquiring homes.

“This initiative marks a significant policy shift and demonstrates our commitment to the welfare of our security officers. It is about dignity, it is about service, and it is about security,” the President added.

The CBK Police Housing Complex stands as a flagship project under the Affordable Housing Programme and signals the government’s intention to merge housing development with strategic service delivery needs.

The inclusion of uniformed officers underlines a growing recognition of the role of housing in enhancing public service morale and effectiveness.
