Nairobi, December 6, 2024 – The African edition of the Kenya Innovation Week 2024, held from November 25 to 29 in Nairobi, served as the backdrop for a groundbreaking milestone in the continent’s innovation landscape: the official launch of the Innovation Agencies in Africa (IAA) Network. This pan-African initiative aims to revolutionize the continent’s innovation ecosystems by fostering collaboration, sharing critical knowledge, and pooling resources.
The IAA Network comes at a pivotal moment, as African countries face rapid technological advancements, climate challenges, and pressing development needs. The network seeks to address these challenges with homegrown, globally competitive solutions by strengthening national and regional innovation systems.
A recent study by the Trilateral Research Chair in Transformative Innovation, the 4th Industrial Revolution, and Sustainable Development (UJ-TRCTI) at the University of Johannesburg highlights the importance of robust innovation systems. The study underscores the critical role innovation agencies play as intermediaries, aligning public policy objectives with the innovative capacities of private sector and academic institutions.

Together, these organizations have contributed approximately 2 million Canadian dollars to fuel the initiative. The network extends existing efforts such as the Science Granting Councils Initiative, further focusing on the commercialization of innovation and strengthening innovation-driven value chains.
The founding members of the IAA Network include:

The network aims to expand its membership across the continent, creating a culture of collaboration and positioning African countries as leaders in the global innovation arena. Its focus includes socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and economically viable solutions tailored to diverse African contexts.
H.E. Dr. William Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, officially launched the network during the Kenya Innovation Week opening ceremony. He emphasized the critical role of innovation in shaping Africa’s future, stating:
“Our commitment to collaboration at the Pan-African and international levels is evident in initiatives like the Kenya-India Innovation Nexus and the Africa Innovation Agencies Network. Kenya is proud of its leading role in defining the continent’s future positively.”
The IAA Network invites African and global innovation stakeholders to join this transformative initiative. By leveraging collective strengths, it aims to unlock Africa’s innovation potential and advance sustainable development goals. Its mission is to position Africa not just as a participant but as a leader in global innovation, addressing the continent’s challenges with creativity, collaboration, and boldness.
