Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka has been appointed Chairperson of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) during the organization’s 56th Annual General Assembly and Summit in Cairo. The one-year term marks a pivotal moment for both Kenya Airways and the African aviation sector.
As Chairperson, Kilavuka will oversee AFRAA’s strategic initiatives, advocate for policies that drive sustainability and growth, and represent the interests of more than 40 member airlines, which account for over 85 percent of Africa’s air transport. His leadership is anticipated to shape the future of African aviation by promoting collaboration, innovation, and global competitiveness.
In his acceptance speech, Kilavuka expressed his gratitude and determination, saying, “It is a privilege to be entrusted with the role of AFRAA Chairperson. I look forward to working alongside industry peers to amplify Africa’s voice in global aviation, foster collaboration, and drive strategic initiatives to help African airlines navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Kilavuka succeeds João Carlos Pó Jorge, CEO of LAM Mozambique, who served as AFRAA Chairperson for two years. Under Jorge’s leadership, AFRAA focused on post-pandemic recovery, sustainability, and fostering strategic partnerships. Kilavuka’s appointment ensures a seamless transition and signals a continued focus on innovation and resilience in the industry.
Kenya Airways was also honored during the summit with the Airline of the Year Award for Best Improved Profitability, acknowledging the carrier’s remarkable financial turnaround and operational excellence in 2023. The award reflects Kenya Airways’ dedication to enhancing efficiency, profitability, and its role in shaping Africa’s aviation narrative.
