The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection announced that it has released Kshs. 3.42 billion for the August 2024 disbursements under the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme.

This release is aimed at supporting the most vulnerable groups in Kenya, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing poverty and improving livelihoods.

The funds will be distributed to 1,703,401 beneficiaries across three key segments of the Inua Jamii programme. Specifically, 1,215,343 beneficiaries will receive payments under the Older Persons Cash Transfer Programme (OPCT), 428,421 will benefit from the Cash Transfer Programme to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (CTOVC), and 59,637 will be supported through the Persons with Severe Disabilities Cash Transfer Programme (PWSD-CT). This marks an increase in the number of beneficiaries from 1,681,623 in July 2024.

The Ministry has scheduled the commencement of payments for Friday, 6th September 2024. This initiative aligns with President Dr. William Ruto’s directive to expand the Inua Jamii programme to 2.5 million beneficiaries over a phased approach. This expansion is part of a broader effort to enhance social safety nets and ensure that more Kenyans in need receive crucial financial support.

Joseph M. Motari, the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, highlighted the significance of this initiative. “The Inua Jamii programme plays a critical role in cushioning the most vulnerable members of our community from the harsh impacts of poverty and hunger. By providing these stipends, we aim to improve their quality of life and support them through challenging times.”

The Inua Jamii programme is a cornerstone of Kenya’s social protection strategy, designed to provide financial assistance to elderly citizens, orphans, vulnerable children, and persons with severe disabilities. This latest disbursement reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing social welfare and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they need.
