Aden Duale has officially taken over as Kenya’s Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary, succeeding Soipan Tuya in a handover ceremony on Monday. The event, marked by formal speeches and commitments, underscored Duale’s dedication to advancing the country’s environmental agenda.

In his inaugural address, Duale expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him and acknowledged the significant contributions of his predecessor, former environment minister John Michuki. He emphasized his intention to continue and build upon Michuki’s ambitious environmental initiatives. “I am committed to picking up from where Michuki left off and to furthering his vision for a greener Kenya,” Duale declared.

A key priority outlined by Duale is the restoration and preservation of Nairobi’s rivers, which he identified as an immediate focus area. This reflects his commitment to addressing urban environmental issues and improving waterway health in the capital city.

During the ceremony, Hon. Tuya, who has recently been appointed to the Defence docket, spoke about the critical importance of environmental stewardship. She highlighted the need for collaborative efforts in tackling climate change challenges and emphasized unity among stakeholders.

Duale also stressed the importance of engaging a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from local communities to private sector partners. His vision includes developing inclusive environmental strategies that balance economic growth with environmental preservation, aiming to maintain Kenya’s leadership in sustainable practices.

The event was attended by ministry officials, environmental stakeholders, and members of the press. In a notable procedural move, Duale officially handed over the Defence portfolio to Hon. Soipan Tuya, marking a significant transition in the cabinet roles.

As Duale embarks on this new role, his administration is expected to prioritize practical environmental solutions and foster greater cooperation across sectors to address Kenya’s pressing environmental challenges
