1 Mins read

Nairobi Kenya, July 29 – Sylvia Jebet Kipkemoi, a telecommunications and information engineering graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), credits Huawei’s Seeds for the Future programme for significantly shaping her career. Amid the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, Sylvia, then a third-year student, discovered the programme through a WhatsApp group formed by her engineering club.

Despite the challenges of competing against senior students, Sylvia’s technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and passion for technology earned her a spot in the programme. The training, conducted virtually due to the pandemic, provided in-depth exposure to emerging technologies like 5G, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence, significantly enhancing her technical skills.

The programme’s global learning and cultural exchange component, typically held at Huawei’s headquarters in China, transitioned to a virtual format during the pandemic. However, Sylvia and three other Kenyan students recently participated in a one-week immersion at MWC Shanghai 2024, further enriching her experience.

“The Huawei Seeds for the Future programme was transformative. Visiting Huawei’s headquarters was an eye-opener. I witnessed the latest innovations and interacted with professionals at the forefront of technological advancements. This exposure has given me valuable insights into the global ICT landscape.” Sylvia said

Beyond technical training, the programme emphasized soft skills development. Sylvia noted that team projects and interactions helped her improve her leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, boosting her confidence.

Currently a Developer Relations Associate at Africa’s Talking, a telecommunication company offering a unified API platform for software developers in Africa, Sylvia is committed to using her skills to drive technological innovation and make a positive impact in her community and beyond.

“Through this programme, I have realized the immense potential of ICT in driving innovation and solving real-world problems. I am grateful to Huawei for the opportunity and am committed to using what I have learned to improve lives in my community and beyond,” she added.
