Justice David Majanja, a respected High Court Judge, has died. He passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at a Nairobi hospital where he had been admitted for surgery.
Justice Majanja was appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 2011 and served in the Milimani Civil Division until his death. On May 28, 2024, he was sworn in as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) after being re-elected to represent the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association (KMJA). He had previously been elected to the JSC on May 14, 2019, following the end of Judge Aggrey Muchelule’s tenure.
Throughout his career, Justice Majanja played a crucial role in various committees. He served as the chairperson of the Human Resource Management Committee and was a member of both the Audit and Governance and Risk Management Committees. He also chaired the Learning and Development Committee.
Educated at Hill School in Eldoret and Alliance High School, Justice Majanja earned a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Pretoria and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi. He completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 1998.
Before his appointment to the High Court, Justice Majanja worked for Mohammed and Muigai Advocates and Onyango and Ohaga Advocates. In 2007, he founded Majanja Luseno and Company Advocates, where he specialized in Civil and Commercial Law and engaged in public interest litigation. He also served as assisting Counsel for the Waki Commission, which investigated the Post Election Violence.
Justice Majanja’s contributions extended to his role as the presiding Judge at Homa Bay and Migori High Courts. At the time of his death, he was the vice chairperson of the Judiciary Committee on Elections.
Justice Majanja’s death is a significant loss to Kenya’s judicial system, where he was known for his dedication and integrity.
