University student leaders from across Kenya have released a joint press statement outlining urgent demands and declarations amid ongoing ‘Gen Z’-led protests. The student leaders, representing universities nationwide, have called on President William Ruto and the public to address their concerns or face further demonstrations, dubbed “Season 2 Gen Z protest.”

Demands and Declarations:

1. Wider Negotiation Space: The student leaders are urging the President to create a more inclusive negotiation platform that represents a broader segment of Kenyan youth beyond the current privileged minority.

2. Release of Detained Individuals: They demand the immediate release of all detained activists and comrades and call on the Government to assume full financial responsibility for those unjustly arrested.

3. Cessation of Violence in Githurai: There is a call for the immediate cessation of what they describe as “mass killings” of comrades in Githurai, emphasizing the urgent need for governmental intervention.

4. Gen Z Democratic Alliance: The statement declares the formation of the Gen Z Democratic Alliance, positioning it as the new opposition force in Kenya, reflecting the political aspirations of the younger generation.

5. Cabinet Dissolution and Leadership Changes: The leaders are demanding the dissolution of the entire Cabinet within two weeks. They specifically call for the removal of key figures such as Ichungwa and Osoro from their leadership positions.

6. Flat Organizational Structure: Emphasizing their commitment to non-hierarchical leadership, the student leaders reject tribalism and promote a flat organizational model within their movement.

7. Continued Activism: The statement encourages Gen Z members to maintain their online activism and to dress in white every Sunday in memory of those comrades who have lost their lives.

8. Education Costs and Employment Opportunities: The Government is urged to review and reduce education fees and to provide a clear employment pathway for all unemployed educated Gen Z individuals by July 24th.

In their concluding remarks, the student leaders reaffirm their commitment to the cause and urge their members to avoid any form of hooliganism, emphasizing peaceful and constructive activism.

This press release highlights the deep-seated issues and growing discontent among Kenya’s youth, reflecting broader societal challenges. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether these demands will be met and how the government will respond to this formidable call for change.
