In a solemn ceremony held yesterday at All Saints Cathedral, hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the late Maina Wanjigi, father of prominent politician Jimmy Wanjigi.
The service was marked by heartfelt tributes, reflections on his impactful life, and the collective mourning of a man remembered for his contributions to both his family and the nation.
James Maina Wanjigi, a self-made billionaire and influential figure in Kenya’s political and economic spheres, passed away on June 28 at the age of 92 while receiving treatment at The Nairobi Hospital.
Wanjigi, a former Kamukunji Member of Parliament (MP) and long-serving Cabinet minister, is mourned as a father and a pillar of the Wanjigi family. He leaves behind a legacy marked by significant contributions to Kenya’s development.
Wanjigi’s political career began in the wake of tragedy, following the assassination of Tom Mboya in 1969. He succeeded Mboya in a by-election and went on to serve as an MP for 25 years. Known for his forward-thinking vision, Wanjigi made a landmark statement in Parliament in 1973, advocating for free primary education in Kenya. His impassioned plea underscored the importance of education in nation-building, a vision that came to fruition three decades later when President Mwai Kibaki implemented free primary education in 2002.
Maina Wanjigi, a respected figure in Kenya, passed away peacefully last week at the age of 92. His life was celebrated for his dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to the values he held dear. Known for his integrity and philanthropy, Wanjigi left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
The service was attended by a cross-section of society, including political leaders, business associates, friends, and family members. Among the notable attendees were Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc-Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Charity Ngilu, Eugene Wamalwa, and several other leaders, all of whom came to offer their condolences to the Wanjigi family.
Jimmy Wanjigi, visibly moved, delivered an emotional eulogy, highlighting the profound influence his father had on his life. “My father was a pillar of strength and wisdom. His guidance and unwavering support shaped the man I am today. His legacy of integrity, hard work, and compassion will continue to inspire us all,” Jimmy lamented
James Orengo also spoke at the ceremony, praising Maina Wanjigi for his contributions to the country and his role as a mentor to many. “Maina Wanjigi was a man of great vision and dedication. His impact on our nation’s development and his commitment to justice and equality are legacies that will endure,” Orengo remarked.
The service was marked by moving hymns, scripture readings, and tributes from family members and friends. Many shared personal anecdotes, painting a picture of a man who was not only a leader in his community but also a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Maina Wanjigi’s philanthropic efforts were also a focal point of the tributes. His support for educational initiatives and his efforts to uplift disadvantaged communities were remembered fondly. Several speakers noted his quiet generosity and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
A sense of profound loss was palpable among the attendees. Yet, there was also a feeling of gratitude for having known a man of such remarkable character. The congregation sang a final hymn, “Amazing Grace,” as Maina Wanjigi’s casket was carried out of the cathedral, symbolizing his peaceful transition to the afterlife.
Maina Wanjigi leaves behind his wife, Mary Wanjigi, his children, grandchildren, and a legacy of service and integrity. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the family’s home in Murang’a County.
The passing of Maina Wanjigi marks the end of an era, but his memory and the values he espoused will continue to inspire future generations. His contributions to Kenya and his unwavering commitment to his family and community will not be forgotten.
