TikTok launches safety training program to empower and protect children online

TikTok has rolled out a groundbreaking safety training program designed to empower children with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the digital world securely and responsibly. This initiative underscores TikTok’s commitment to fostering a safe, creative, and inclusive online environment while equipping young users with digital literacy tools.

In Kenya, TikTok has joined forces with Eveminet Communications Solutions and the Kenya Scouts Association to deliver comprehensive training on digital safety and well-being. This collaboration aims to empower children, youth, and communities with the skills to use the internet effectively and responsibly.

Eveminet, renowned for its expertise in digital literacy, is working with TikTok to promote a secure online experience. By focusing on education and awareness, the partnership seeks to ensure children and young users can harness the benefits of technology while minimizing exposure to risks.

Speaking at a TikTok Safety Workshop hosted at Zetech University, Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, TikTok’s Director of Government Relations and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the platform’s dedication to safety.

“We are committed to fostering a safe and welcoming environment where everyone can express themselves freely and creatively while being protected from potential harm,” said Mgwili-Sibanda.

By bringing in experts to conduct safety training, TikTok is taking a proactive approach to developing forward-looking policies and addressing regional safety concerns. This initiative not only manages current challenges but also anticipates future risks, ensuring the platform remains a safe space for users of all ages.

Zetech University is among the institutions championing the importance of digital safety education. During the workshop, Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene highlighted the need for robust safety measures to protect young internet users.

“There is a pressing need to enhance safety measures on digital platforms. Introducing age-appropriate privacy settings and controls is essential to safeguarding children and promoting their well-being online,” stated Prof. Munene.

TikTok’s safety training program is a step forward in addressing the challenges of the digital age. By partnering with local organizations and experts, the platform is empowering children to harness technology effectively while minimizing risks.

The initiative reflects TikTok’s broader vision of creating a secure online community where users can thrive creatively and socially. Through collaborations with institutions like Zetech University and the Kenya Scouts Association, TikTok is reinforcing its role as a leader in promoting online safety and well-being.

As the program gains momentum, it sets a benchmark for how social media platforms can contribute to a safer, more inclusive digital future for all. TikTok’s efforts demonstrate that innovation in technology must go hand-in-hand with responsibility, ensuring that the youngest users are protected and empowered.
