Safaricom PLC has introduced two new propositions, Ofa Ya Boda Boda and Bundle Ya Deree, to help the transport sector in Kenya by reducing the cost of ride-hailing drivers and boda boda riders.
These new packages bring together affordable connectivity, subsidized insurance cover, financial literacy training, and fuel discounts, thus making Safaricom a major partner in revitalizing Kenya’s rolling stock sector.
In such business, voice and data bundles are made cheap for operators who will also get free navigation advice through Google Maps and the ride-hailing app free of charge so as to keep them informed throughout their working hours.
Furthermore to the problem of safety and security, in the same package, the drivers and the riders will be given insurance at a low cost that will cover them for accidents, health issues, and the loss of income accompanied with financial literacy and road safety training.
As part of the financial empowerment drive, Safaricom has launched Safire Connect empowerment forums where operators will be taught about entrepreneurship, digital skills, and AI fluency.
In addition, 4G-enabled devices that are affordable will be made available to the drivers and the riders so as to help them tap into the online opportunities and increase their earnings.
Moreover, operators will be able to save on fuel through the discount offers as the drivers using the Bundle Ya Deree will be able to get the fuel they need at reduced prices especially on Shell FuelSave Unleaded and V-Power every Friday at the Shell outlets all over the country.
“We are cognizant of the challenges that the transport sector has, the Kenyans and the rising costs of operations being at the top of the list and whatnot. We are intending to alleviate the situation through our partnership with Safaricom and one of the ways by which we will accomplish this is the fuel discounts to the drivers,” said Patrick Masinde, Retail Manager, Vivo Energy Kenya.
Fawzia Ali-Kimanthi, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, mentioned that such an initiative depicts Safaricom’s resolve of bettering people’s lives by giving them access to the world of opportunities and to the know-how. “We boil it down to a single act of giving connectivity, safety, insurance, and financial empowerment to this critical sector by Ofa Ya Boda Boda and Bundle Ya Deree,” she added.
According to the KNBS Economic Survey of 2025, the transport sector accounts for 4.4% of Kenya’s GDP. The boda boda sector, which has more than 1.4 million registered motorcycles, is estimated to provide over one million direct jobs and generate around KES 1 billion daily.
On top of the fact that these different propositions from Safaricom will be instrumental in the transport sector accessing the advantages of technology in the forms of smart working, saving, and securing their livelihoods, they are also tantamount to the firm commitment to addressing the main concerns that have been there in the sector in the form of high costs, safety risks, and financial vulnerability.
