Kenya has earned fresh global recognition after being ranked fourth in Africa for digitizing its tourism sector, a milestone that underscores the country’s growing reputation as a leader in technological innovation within the travel industry.
The announcement was made in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during a global forum highlighting the transformative role of technology and innovation in shaping the future of tourism. The accolade comes as the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife continues to implement wide-ranging reforms aimed at modernizing the sector and enhancing Kenya’s global visibility.
One of the key initiatives driving this success is a comprehensive digital campaign by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) to showcase all of Kenya’s tourism attractions online. The effort ensures that the country’s diverse destinations — from the world-famous Maasai Mara and the Kenyan coast to cultural heritage sites and urban experiences — are easily accessible to travelers worldwide.
“The announcement in Riyadh is a testament that the world out here is watching Kenya and wants to know more about this country,” said Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that we clinch the first position. We have a lot coming, especially involving our young people.”
Miano noted that the recognition also reflects the ministry’s efforts to align tourism development with President William Ruto’s bottom-up economic transformation agenda, which emphasizes inclusivity and job creation. “Kenya is a magical country, and the support we get from President William Ruto is something we are grateful for,” she added.
Other African countries recognized in the rankings include South Africa, Mauritius, and Botswana, while the United States leads globally in tourism digitization.
Kenya’s progress marks a significant step toward becoming a fully digital tourism destination. Through continued investment in online platforms, digital infrastructure, and youth engagement, the ministry hopes to attract more visitors, boost local economies, and cement Kenya’s place as a global tourism innovation hub.
