Kenya Airways soars to victory in Global Aviation Challenge

1 Mins read

Kenya Airways (KQ) has cemented its status as a trailblazer in sustainable aviation by emerging as a top performer at the 2024 SkyTeam Aviation Challenge. The airline dazzled the global stage, clinching two prestigious awards: Best Scaled Catering Solution and Best Approach to Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel

In the Best Scaled Catering Solution category, KQ’s innovative strategy to eliminate single-use plastics stole the spotlight. By introducing traditional African bread baskets and aluminum food containers in economy class, the airline is set to eliminate a staggering 24 tonnes of plastic waste annually.

The airline’s ambitious SAF project was another highlight. Partnering with a local producer, KQ is spearheading the establishment of Kenya’s first-ever SAF production plant in Kwale County. This initiative promises to deliver affordable SAF, create local jobs, and combat climate change by cultivating energy seed plants on degraded land

Beyond the headline awards, Kenya Airways earned recognition in categories such as Best Team Collaboration for fostering cross-departmental innovation, and Best Climate Literacy for rolling out multi-level sustainability training programs. The airline’s holistic approach to sustainability, from geo-optimized ground operations to passenger e-mobility solutions, has set a benchmark for the global aviation industry.

Speaking at the awards ceremony in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, CEO Allan Kilavuka expressed pride in the airline’s achievements: “These wins are a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation. By embracing SAF, reducing plastics, and fostering collaboration, we are driving meaningful change for our industry and the planet.”

This year’s SkyTeam Aviation Challenge, held on January 14-15, marked the third edition of the prestigious event. Focused on scaling impactful solutions, the competition recognized KQ’s bold steps, including sustainability-focused long-haul flights to New York, Amsterdam, Paris, and London.

From in-flight catering to waste management, Kenya Airways is redefining eco-friendly air travel. Its pioneering efforts not only position the airline as a global leader in sustainability but also as a beacon of hope for a greener future.

Kenya Airways isn’t just flying high—it’s flying green.
