IFC launches initiatives to combat workplace gender-based violence

1 Mins read

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has introduced two groundbreaking initiatives to address gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in workplaces worldwide.

The Gender-Based Violence Center of Expertise and the Respect@Work Program aim to create safer, more inclusive business environments, recognizing that eliminating GBVH is critical for gender equality, improved business performance, and unlocking the economic potential of women and marginalized groups.

Gender-Based Violence Center of Expertise

The Gender-Based Violence Center of Expertise will serve as a global knowledge hub, offering IFC clients and private sector actors toolkits, training, and advisory support to prevent and respond to GBVH.

The Center will assist companies in implementing policies and practices that foster safer, more resilient workplaces and communities. By promoting a culture of respect and accountability, the initiative seeks to drive systemic change across industries, ensuring employees are protected and empowered.

Respect@Work program

Complementing the Center, the Respect@Work Program, part of IFC’s Kenya2 Equal Initiative in collaboration with the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), provides a peer-learning platform for companies to collaborate and implement strategies for safer work environments.

Drawing on real-world case studies and international best practices, including the ILO Convention 190, the program equips businesses with practical tools to address GBVH effectively.

It forms a key part of IFC’s broader mission to build respectful workplaces globally.

Business Benefits of Addressing GBVH

Research highlights that tackling GBVH enhances employee retention, productivity, and corporate reputation. Workplaces free from violence attract top talent and foster innovation, driving economic benefits. “Gender-based violence and harassment is a workplace issue demanding urgent action,” said Gillian Rogers, IFC’s Principal Country Officer in Kenya. “Workplaces free from violence are more productive and inclusive.

IFC is committed to partnering with the private sector to create environments where every worker feels safe and valued.”

A Call for Collective Action

Through these initiatives, IFC is leading the charge to eliminate GBVH, promoting safer, more equitable workplaces worldwide.
