The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) brought together hundreds of engineers for the annual Engineers Golf Day at Ruiru Sports Club, an event that blended sport, networking, and mentorship with a noble cause.
Raising Funds for Future Engineers
According to the IEK President, Eng. Shammah Kiteme, the initiative seeks to raise funds to support engineering students across Kenya in joining the professional body. Currently, 17 universities in the country offer engineering training, with about 2,500 students enrolling in engineering programs annually.
“Our goal is to ensure that no student pursuing engineering misses the opportunity to become a member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya,” said Eng. Kiteme. “By starting as student members, they can smoothly transition to graduate, corporate, and eventually fellow members.”
Mentorship and Growth Opportunities
Eng. Okova Derek, a participant in the tournament, emphasised the importance of the initiative in mentoring young engineers. “It is often difficult for students to afford membership fees. With this fund, they will join at no cost, giving them access to mentorship and guidance from seasoned engineers,” he explained.
Several sponsors, including Galana Energies, Kenya Pipeline Company, KERA, Davis & Shirtliff, and ICA, partnered with IEK to make the event a success. Derek noted that the tournament will now become an annual event to build a sustainable fund for student memberships.
A Blend of Golf, Networking, and Hospitality
Ruiru Sports Club Captain Justus Mathenge praised the turnout, with over 250 golfers participating. “Ruiru is the home of hospitality, and today engineers are not only enjoying golf but also advancing the national engineering agenda,” he said.
Electrical engineer Titus Koech added that IEK continues to play a key role in inspiring young professionals. “We encourage students to join early, so they can transition smoothly into professional and consulting engineers,” he said.
The Engineers Golf Day is set to become a flagship event, nurturing the next generation of engineers while strengthening Kenya’s engineering fraternity.
