Athletics Kenya Postpones Opening Weekend Meet Due to Muddy Mumias Track

1 Mins read

Athletics Kenya (AK) has postponed its first Open Track and Field Weekend Meet for the 2026 season after heavy rains left the Mumias Sports Complex unfit for competition.

The event, which was scheduled to take place this Saturday, was called off after officials deemed the track unsafe following persistent downpours that turned the field muddy.

Hundreds of athletes had arrived at the stadium as early as 7 a.m., but after hours of delay and unsuccessful efforts to clear and level the ground using excavators, AK officials announced the postponement at around 10 a.m.

According to AK, attempts to secure an alternative venue on short notice were unsuccessful. The federation has now postponed the first meet until further notice.

However, the second meet of the 2026 season is expected to go on as planned in mid-January at Thika Stadium.

The postponement is a blow to athletes who had been eager to kick off the new athletics calendar and test their form ahead of the national championships.
