The directors of Kirawa Road School in Kitisuru, Nairobi, have travelled to Tanzania following the death of a learner during an educational trip to Arusha as they work with authorities and the bereaved family to establish what happened.
In a statement shared through the school’s WhatsApp channel on Friday, November 6, the management confirmed that the directors were in Tanzania to engage relevant authorities and the deceased learner’s family over the incident.
The school said the team was working closely with those involved to establish the circumstances surrounding the learner’s death and address the matter. However, the statement did not disclose how or when the learner died.
The management also conveyed its condolences to the family, while acknowledging the emotional impact of the incident on other learners and members of staff who accompanied the group to Tanzania. The incident occurred during an educational trip to Arusha, which saw learners travel from Nairobi to Tanzania earlier in the week.
“We have lost a cherished member of our learning family, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the bereaved family during this painful time,” the school said in its statement.
Updates previously shared by the school’s administration with parents through its WhatsApp channel show that the learners were expected to gather at the school on Sunday, November 1, at 6pm before beginning their journey.
On Monday, November 2, at 1:30pm, the administration informed parents that the group had completed border clearance and was proceeding into Tanzania. The learners later began their return journey to Kenya on Thursday, November 5. In an update sent to parents at 7:56am, the school confirmed that the group was departing Arusha.
Later that evening, at 6:39pm, the administration communicated that the learners had arrived safely in Nairobi and asked parents to make arrangements to collect their children from the school. The school’s latest statement comes as the management works with the relevant authorities and the family to establish the full circumstances of the tragedy.
While the school has confirmed that its directors are in Tanzania handling the matter, it has not provided further details about the cause of death or the specific events that led to the learner’s death during the trip.
