Bamburi Invests in Clean Water for 100 Kilifi Homes

Bamburi Cement Plc has strengthened access to clean water and basic education in Bureni Village, Vipingo, Kilifi County, after commissioning a solar-powered borehole and handing over two newly built classrooms at a local primary school.

The projects aim to improve living conditions for residents and provide learners with a better environment for their studies. The borehole will supply potable water to more than 100 households, while the classrooms will support the growing number of pupils at Bureni Primary School.

“When the community decided to expand Bureni School to include Grade 6, it contacted Bamburi. Last year, we constructed the Grade 6 classroom and donated a water tank. This year, we constructed two more classrooms for Grade 7 and Grade 8, equipped with lockers and seats to give more than 100 learners a conducive learning environment,” said Geofrey Ndugwa Bamburi Cement Managing Director.

Ndugwa said the projects were developed in response to requests from the local community. The latest developments, together with other initiatives in the area, are valued at more than KSh5 million.

The two classrooms will help accommodate learners in Grades 7 and 8, while the provision of lockers and seats is expected to improve the learning environment at the school.

The solar-powered borehole will also help meet the community’s water needs by providing a source of potable water. Its solar-powered system is designed to pump water without relying entirely on conventional electricity supplies.

The latest projects build on Bamburi Cement’s community support initiatives in Vipingo, which began in 2023. These include education sponsorships for 16 students, two free medical camps and a sanitation and hygiene programme.

The company has also supported the grading of community access roads and continues to donate firewood and murram to support local needs.

Bamburi Cement said it identifies its community projects in consultation with local leaders and residents to ensure the initiatives address priorities raised by the people who live in the area. Through these investments, the cement manufacturer aims to strengthen its relationship with the surrounding community while supporting access to essential services.

The water and education projects reflect the role private companies can play in addressing local development challenges, particularly in rural areas where communities need better access to clean water, school facilities and healthcare services.

Bamburi Cement said it remains committed to working with host communities to deliver sustainable solutions that improve livelihoods and support long-term development.
