Airtel Funds Garissa Deaf School Upgrade

Learners at Garissa School for the Deaf are set to benefit from improved classrooms, digital learning facilities and better access to clean water and sanitation following the launch of a KSh12.7 million infrastructure project by Airtel Money Kenya and ChildFund Kenya.

The project, implemented through the Airtel Africa Foundation under the “Building Brighter Futures” initiative, aims to create a safer and more inclusive learning environment for children with disabilities.

The development will see the construction of four new classrooms to accommodate the school’s growing student population, alongside an ICT centre where learners can develop digital skills and access new educational opportunities.

The project will also improve water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. Planned developments include modern toilet and bathroom blocks with separate facilities for boys and girls, an extended water pipeline and an elevated tower fitted with a 20,000-litre storage tank.

In addition, the school will receive a 20-point handwashing station to promote proper hygiene and a separate two-door sanitation facility for teachers. “Our commitment with this project goes beyond infrastructure; it is about creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow and pursue their dreams,” Said Airtel Money Kenya Acting Managing Director Bonke Michael.

Bonke Michael said the investment goes beyond building facilities, focusing on giving every child a supportive environment in which to learn and develop, adding that children deserve quality education and the tools to reach their full potential

The Garissa project forms part of the wider KSh62 million “Building Brighter Futures” initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 2,000 learners in four public schools across Baringo, Garissa and Wajir counties.

The initiative began in Baringo County, where KSh37 million was allocated to improve learning and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities at Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired.

Fatuma Omar, a Curriculum Support Officer for Special Needs Education in Garissa County, said improved school facilities are essential for effective curriculum delivery and ensuring learners have equal opportunities to succeed.

The project reflects the partners’ commitment to inclusive education by addressing the different needs of learners, particularly children living with disabilities.

Through investments in classrooms, digital technology, water and sanitation, Airtel Money Kenya, the Airtel Africa Foundation and ChildFund Kenya aim to help create school environments where learners can build confidence, acquire essential skills and pursue their ambitions.
