KCB Bank Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with public universities to support their transition towards cleaner, more efficient and climate-resilient campuses.
The partnership seeks to address financial, infrastructure and sustainability challenges facing institutions of higher learning while supporting investments that can reduce operating costs and improve resource efficiency.
Under the agreement, KCB will support universities in financing green interventions including solar energy systems, energy-efficiency projects, clean cooking technologies, waste management, biogas systems, solar water heating and rainwater harvesting.
The initiatives are expected to help universities reduce their environmental footprint while strengthening their resilience to climate-related challenges. They will also enable institutions to improve the management of energy and water resources while creating healthier and more sustainable learning environments.
Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony, KCB Bank Kenya Managing Director Annastacia Kimtai said public universities continue to face pressure from constrained budgets, rising operational costs and significant infrastructure requirements.
She noted that improving financial efficiency and diversifying revenue streams will be critical to strengthening the sustainability of higher learning institutions.
“Access to appropriate financing remains one of the barriers to the clean-energy transition for learning institutions, and KCB is prepared to use its financial expertise and partnerships to help address that gap,” Kimtai said.
She added that universities investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency and responsible water management could reduce long-term operational costs while demonstrating environmental leadership.
The partnership builds on KCB’s recent collaboration with the State Department for Higher Education and Research, through which the bank committed to supporting the development of more sustainable and resilient universities across Kenya.
The earlier partnership focused on practical interventions aimed at helping universities reduce their environmental impact, improve resource efficiency and lower operating expenses.
Through the latest agreement, KCB is positioning green financing as an important tool for supporting the higher education sector while advancing climate action and sustainable development.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen the financial and operational resilience of public universities, benefiting students, staff and surrounding communities.
