The Family Group Foundation has partnered with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to accelerate restoration of the Ngong Hills Forest Ecosystem through a one-million tree seedlings nursery project.
The partnership was formalised through a three-year Framework for Collaboration that will focus on increasing seedling production, supporting tree-growing initiatives and strengthening community participation in forest conservation.
The initiative builds on restoration efforts launched by the Foundation in 2021. So far, the Foundation has invested more than KSh18 million in restoring the landscape, with over 20,000 indigenous seedlings planted and 70 acres placed under active restoration.
Family Group Foundation Executive Director John Waimiri said the Foundation aims to scale restoration across the targeted 240-acre landscape by 2030.
He said the partnership with KFS would help shift efforts from individual tree planting to long-term ecosystem restoration, leveraging the agency’s technical expertise and institutional mandate.
KFS Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko said the collaboration would also focus on communities living around the forest ecosystem.
The partnership will utilise KFS’s Model Tree Nursery blueprint to increase the production of quality seedlings.
The project supports Kenya’s broader climate action agenda and the Government’s 15 billion Tree Growing Programme.
