FIDA-Kenya Calls for Accountability After Utumishi Girls Academy Fire Tragedy

The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Kenya) has called for accountability and improved school safety measures following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that killed 16 students and injured 74 others. The organisation also urged authorities to provide psychosocial support and conduct thorough investigations into the incident.

In a statement released on Thursday, FIDA-Kenya expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the loss of young lives in a learning institution as a national tragedy.

FIDA-Kenya Chairperson Christine Kungu conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with students, teachers, and the wider school community affected by the devastating fire.

“We mourn with the affected families and extend our sincere condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones,” she said.

The organisation also expressed concern for the surviving students, many of whom are now facing trauma, fear, and uncertainty following the incident.

FIDA-Kenya called for a swift, thorough, and independent investigation into the cause of the fire, urging authorities to ensure full accountability if any safety or security lapses are established.

The organisation emphasised the need for immediate psychosocial support for affected learners and families, while insisting that all emergency response efforts must uphold child safeguarding standards and preserve the dignity of victims.

FIDA-Kenya further urged authorities and stakeholders to keep affected families informed as investigations continue.

The fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy has sparked national grief and renewed debate over the safety of students in boarding schools across the country.

Families seeking psychosocial assistance have been encouraged to contact FIDA-Kenya through its toll-free support line, 0800 720 501.

FIDA-Kenya said it will continue monitoring the situation as part of its commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, and well-being of women and girls in Kenya.
