The GSMA has conferred its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, in recognition of his transformative role in shaping the global telecommunications landscape and expanding connectivity to billions worldwide.
The rare honour, bestowed on only a select few leaders in the GSMA’s history, celebrates contributions that have left a lasting and defining mark on the global communications ecosystem.
Global Recognition at Mobile World Congress
The award was presented during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in the presence of His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, President of Catalonia Salvador Illa, and leading figures from the global telecom industry.
Mittal’s recognition places him among an exclusive group of industry pioneers whose leadership has fundamentally influenced the evolution of mobile communications worldwide.
Building a Global Telecom Giant
A visionary in the telecom sector, Mittal built Bharti Airtel into one of the world’s leading mobile operators. The company operates across India and Africa and ranks among the top three global telecom players, serving more than half a billion customers.
Under his leadership, Airtel pioneered the expansion of affordable mobile services across emerging markets, playing a pivotal role in increasing access to communication, financial services and digital platforms for millions.
Championing Policy and Digital Inclusion
Mittal also served as Chairman of the GSMA from 2017 to 2018, where he advocated for policy frameworks that encouraged investment and innovation. During his tenure, he strengthened the industry’s commitment to connecting underserved populations and advancing digital inclusion.
He was previously honoured with the GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2008 and again in 2016 for his contribution to the growth and development of the global mobile industry. In 2019, he was felicitated at MWC in recognition of his leadership during his GSMA chairmanship.
