China has decided to ban hidden door handles in electric vehicles to address increasing safety concerns and this move also signals that the controversial design which Tesla popularized, has received its first major regulatory challenge in China.
According to fresh guidelines from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, starting January 1, 2027, all passenger vehicles domestically sold in China must be equipped with mechanical door release systems accessible from both sides, inside and outside of the vehicle. In other words, these new codes will ban fully hidden and electronically dependent door handles.
The move came after a close examination of electric vehicle safety in connection with a series of fatalities in which two Xiaomi electric car crashes in China were involved. In those cases, powers failure allegedly kept people from exiting the vehicles and the occupants were consequently trapped inside.
Safety inspectors have raised the issue that remote, controlled or flush, mounted handles may fail in crashes, fires, or electrical breakdowns causing delays in rescue operations and increasing the death toll.
The newly introduced rules require that every passenger door’s exterior, except the boot door, must have an indent or recess large enough to fit a hand measuring at least 6cm by 2cm by 2. 5cm that enables manual opening.
These precautions aim to make it possible for both the occupants and the first responders to unlock doors rapidly in emergency situations even if the vehicle runs out of power.
Although the regulations are limited only to vehicles sold in China, there are solid reasons for their global impact. China being the largest automotive market in the world and a key manufacturing center for EVs.
Currently, hidden door handles are widespread in the countrys new energy vehicle marketcomprising of electric, hybrid, and fuel, cell vehiclesand they are in almost 60 percent of the top 100 best, selling NEV models, according to China Daily.
Manufacturers that already have approvals will be allowed a two, year period after the regulation for changes in designs replacing the existing ones. Nonetheless, the rule is expected to lead to significant redesigns throughout the industry.
While Teslas door handles are under investigations by the US safety regulators, definechecks are also looking into the possibility of stricter rules in Europe
The decision of China demonstrates a change towards giving the first preference to practical safety over sleek aesthetics, which may eventually become a new global standard for vehicle design.
