Nine people have been confirmed dead in a road crash between a bus and a Nissan matatu in Naivasha, along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The accident involved two minors.
The accident occurred in the early morning hours near the Kayole estate, located about 10 kilometres from the town of Naivasha. The matatu was speeding and overtaking a fleet of cars when it head-on collided with an approaching bus.
Six people died instantly as a result of the crash, whereas three others died from their wounds upon arrival at Naivasha sub-county hospital. Many injured passengers are being treated in different medical facilities in Naivasha.
The authorities have dispatched their rescue teams comprising the police and medical personnel. The authorities are also conducting investigations into the matter where some reports indicate that it was a result of reckless driving.
The Nairobi-Nakuru highway is one of the major transport routes and has in the past witnessed fatal road crashes, and there are therefore continuous appeals for drivers to adhere to road traffic rules.
