A section of leaders from Garissa County has called for swift and transparent investigations into the death of a 25-year-old taxi driver who died under unclear circumstances early Tuesday morning.
The leaders, led by Garissa Township Member of Parliament Major (Rtd) Dekow Mohamed, allege that the deceased, identified as Sheikh Ahmed Omar, was fatally shot by officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) stationed at Modika. According to the leaders, the incident occurred at a roadblock along the Nunow–Modogashe road.
They further accused the officers involved of attempting to cover up the killing, raising concerns over accountability and the conduct of security agencies in the area.
The leaders are now demanding an independent probe into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding Omar’s death and to ensure those responsible are held to account.
Residents and family members of the deceased have also expressed shock and anger over the incident, calling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to move with speed and provide clarity.
