Safaricom PLC has marked a major milestone as it celebrates its 25th anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to powering digital transformation, financial inclusion, and sustainable growth across Kenya and the wider region.
Launched on October 23, 2000, Safaricom has grown from a modest mobile service provider into a purpose-driven technology giant, transforming lives through innovation in connectivity, mobile money, and community development.
Speaking during the Silver Jubilee celebrations in Nairobi, Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa reflected on the company’s journey and future ambitions.
“Today, we are not only celebrating 25 years of existence, but 25 years of connecting and transforming the lives of millions across the region,” he said. “From the first mobile call made on our network in 2000 to becoming a key driver of Kenya’s digital economy, our story has been one of innovation, inclusion, and impact. As we look to the future, we remain committed to driving digital transformation, supporting enterprise, and empowering communities to thrive in a connected world.”
Over the past two and a half decades, Safaricom has been at the forefront of Kenya’s technological revolution. The company now serves over 50 million customers across its mobile network, cementing its place as the country’s largest telco.
Its flagship innovation, M-PESA, has revolutionized financial services by enabling millions to send, receive, and save money with ease. With over 35 million active users, M-PESA continues to be a catalyst for economic growth, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion both in Kenya and beyond.
The company has invested heavily in expanding its network infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity for all Kenyans. With the rollout of 5G technology, Safaricom has positioned Kenya as a regional leader in digital innovation, enabling faster internet speeds, supporting emerging technologies, and improving service delivery across multiple sectors including convenient access to government services from any location.
In 2022, Safaricom expanded its footprint to Ethiopia, where it has introduced M-PESA and other digital solutions to support the country’s financial inclusion and connectivity goals. By August 2025, Safaricom Ethiopia had surpassed 10 million customers, signaling strong regional growth.
True to its purpose of Transforming Lives, the company continues to invest in community initiatives through the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, focusing on health, education, and environmental conservation. These programs have touched millions of lives, reinforcing Safaricom’s legacy as a responsible corporate citizen.
