A new site inspection handbook has been developed to strengthen supervision in Kenya’s construction sector and safeguard the integrity of buildings.
Going through this handbook, which is a collaboration between the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), the National Construction Authority (NCA), and county governments, one gets safety checks that are easy to comprehend for each stage of construction, whether it is the electrical or structural part of the building.
In the course of the release, IEK President Eng. Shammah Kiteme said the handbook is a game-changer in the ,sector and as he ,put it deserves aacknowledgement, dgment not only for the reason that it will prevent building collapses but also create conditions that enhance professional accountability.
“Besides this being a handbook for the industry it is a lifesaver as realisation of strict standards in constructions will be the norm with this one. No doubt professionals will also be accountable thus no place will there be for shortcuts,” said Eng. Kiteme hin his remarks.
The situation is also being defined by the various organisations’ fears of frequent building collapses all across the country. Poor workmanship, inadequate enforcement of regulations, and the use of substandard materials are some of the factors that result in these tragedies.
By standardizing inspection procedures, stakeholders hope the new handbook will overcome these fears and put public confidence back into the safety of buildings, and compliance with construction
