In a new report, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) highlights a labour migration surge within the region as a result of a rapid population increase of 64 million people over the last few years.
Released in Mombasa on Friday, the report is a comprehensive examination of migration and displacement patterns with the main objective of improving the availability and use of reliable data as a basis for both local and regional migration policies.
IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary Mohamed Ware stressed the point that solid statistics are the basis for drawing up development strategies.
“Only when data are accurate, reliable, and up-to-date can countries come up with evidence-based policies and national development plans,” Ware said at the launch.
The outcomes are expected to help governments in the process of aligning migration policies, solving the problems of labour mobility, and making sure that migration becomes a source of sustainable growth and stability in the IGAD region.
