The announcement was made during the  41st  COMESA Trade and Customs Committee meeting. Currently underway in Nairobi from July 22–25.

The high-level technical committee, which reports directly to the COMESA Council of Ministers, brings together delegates from 21 member states. Set to deliberate on trade facilitation, customs harmonization, and implementation of regional trade strategies

Regional Unity and Economic Integration Top the Agenda

Speaking during the opening session, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Trade in Kenya. It reaffirmed the country’s commitment to COMESA’s integration agenda and underscored the importance of regional unity in navigating global economic challenges.

“This 41st session marks another crucial milestone in our collective journey towards deeper regional integration,” said the PS. “Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing a strong and integrated COMESA. We believe is vital for economic growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods.” The statement was read by Dr. Christopher Onyango, Director for Trade and Customs at the COMESA Secretariat on behalf of PS.

Kenya, currently serving as vice chair, will officially take over the bloc’s leadership between October 7–9, 2025. The country is to hosts the COMESA Heads of State Summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

Extensive preparations are already underway, with several inter-ministerial and regional committees formed to coordinate logistics, programs, and stakeholder participation.

Preparations in Full Swing for Nairobi Summit

The summit will be accompanied by major side events, including a regional trade exhibition targeting women, youth, persons with disabilities, and small-scale traders. These exhibitions, to be held at the KICC grounds, aim to promote inclusivity and local enterprise.

Key Deliberations: Trade, Customs, and Digital Solutions

Dr. Christopher Onyango, Director for Trade and Customs at the COMESA Secretariat, highlighted key agenda items under discussion at the technical meeting.

These include reports on the Free Trade Area (FTA), the Simplified Trade Regime (STR). Also,  progress on the electronic certificate of origin. Additionally, the COMESA strategy for implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“The STR is particularly critical as it facilitates cross-border trade for small-scale traders, especially women and youth,” said Dr. Onyango. “We are also tackling non-tariff barriers and implementing digital tools to streamline customs procedures and improve efficiency.”

Delegates are also reviewing trade data, operational challenges, and customs cooperation mechanisms among member states. A recent COMESA study revealed that the region has untapped trade potential of nearly $100 billion due to persistent trade barriers and low productivity.

Kenya’s hosting of the summit is expected to boost the hospitality, tourism, and service sectors, while enhancing the country’s regional influence in trade diplomacy.

Amplifying Africa’s Voice Amid Global Trade Shifts

The summit is also seen as an opportunity to amplify Africa’s collective voice in global trade negotiations. Shifting U.S. trade policies such as changes in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

This year’s summit will be a defining moment in shaping the future of trade in Eastern and Southern Africa. Kenya, as the new chair, is poised to lead these efforts with vision, inclusivity, and innovation.
