A section of University student leaders in Nairobi have called on the youth to maintain peace ahead of the planned Saba Saba demonstrations, warning against violence, destruction, and loss of life.
Addressing the media on Sunday, Remmy Osoti, student leader at Multimedia University of Kenya condemned the planned protests, accusing organizers of hijacking the original intentions of the Gen Z-led movement.
“We condemn looting, rape, political incitement, and personal interests that have overtaken the genuine struggle for accountability. The true Gen Z protests are no more. What we are witnessing now is planned chaos. We urge young people to stay indoors tomorrow.” Osoti said
The student leaders lamented that the protests, which began on June 25, 2024 as a peaceful pushback against government policies, have since been infiltrated by criminal elements and political opportunists.
“We must not allow political interests to misuse our energy and anger. Businesses that were looted belong to our parents. Destroying property is not the way forward.” said Osoti
Ramesh Saxena, a student leader at University of Nairobi emphasized the need for non-violent civic action. “We are not against seeking justice. But we want a nation where youth can protest without fear, where our mothers can go to the streets and return home safely. We want to see a country where justice does not come at the cost of bloodshed or broken livelihoods.” he said
The leaders called for dialogue and urged the government to listen to the youth’s concerns while also ensuring public safety. They reiterated their commitment to peaceful advocacy and encouraged fellow students to be vigilant against being used as tools of political manipulation.
“We must not lose the gains already made. Let us remain focused, protect our country, and pursue justice without chaos.” Osoti added
