The Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) has launched an ambitious Player Development Program, anchored by a new competitive circuit dubbed The Equator Tour, in a historic move to transform professional golf in the country and propel local talent to the global stage, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Unveiled at a high-profile event in Nairobi, the program is a bold collaboration between PGK, the Kenyan government, and corporate sponsors including NCBA Bank, Safaricom, Visa, Britam Group, Kenya Airways, Nation Media Group, Standard Media Group, and Diageo.
“This plan is more than a roadmap it’s a commitment to our professionals,” said PGK Chairman John Wangai. “We are investing in our players with the intention of creating a consistent pipeline of talent channeled from juniors and amateurs who can perform regionally, continentally, and globally.”
Olympic Dream Drives United Front
PGK’s long-term vision is to build a self-sustaining, athlete-centered professional golf ecosystem that not only nurtures emerging talent but also creates commercial opportunities. The Equator Tour, a fully PGK-owned and managed professional golf circuit, will be a key part of this vision, providing players with regular competition, world ranking points, and visibility.
“This is our platform for change,” said PGK CEO Robert Muthomi. “The Equator Tour addresses gaps in opportunity and visibility. This is how we build champions.”
John Gachora, Group Managing Director and CEO of NCBA, applauded the strong alignment between corporates and the vision to see Kenyan golfers compete at the Olympics.
“We are collectively aligned as corporate sponsors and believers in a shared Kenyan dream,” Gachora said. “We stand together with the vision of creating more jobs through monetizing talent and raising our flag on global golfing stages.”
Corporate Sponsorships Fuel the Dream
Corporates at the event pledged their support through both financial backing and team sponsorships.
Safaricom CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa announced a KES 3 million investment to support four professional golfers under the Equator Tour.
“Our goal is to create a sustainable pathway for professional golfers in Kenya—one that inspires, empowers and transforms lives through sport,” said Ndegwa.
Visa East Africa GM Chad Pollock noted the alignment between Visa’s mission and the PGK initiative:
“When people are empowered to take even the smallest step forward, they unlock the potential for extraordinary outcomes.”
Philip Ocholla, President of the Kenya Golf Federation, emphasized the unprecedented unity among golf stakeholders:
“This is the first time in our history that we are seeing such alignment across federations. The success of golf in Kenya depends on this unity.”
Evans Achoki, Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, reaffirmed government backing:
“PGK’s work reflects the Ministry’s goal of expanding commercial opportunities for young athletes. We are fully committed to its success.”
