Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen today toured Baringo County to evaluate the security situation and assess the impact of Operation Maliza Uhalifu, the government-led initiative aimed at eradicating banditry in the North Rift region.

The operation, launched to combat cattle rustling and restore peace in pastoralist communities, has been a major priority for the government. Addressing security officers and local leaders, Murkomen expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, citing significant strides in dismantling criminal networks that have terrorized the region for years.

“The government remains fully committed to supporting security forces through resource mobilization and the integration of modern technology to combat banditry effectively,” Murkomen stated, emphasizing the administration’s resolve to ensure long-term stability in the region.

Despite isolated incidents of insecurity, the CS noted a steady return to normalcy, with schools reopening and displaced families resettling. He commended the dedication of multi-agency security teams, including specialized police units, for their relentless efforts in restoring order

Murkomen urged local leaders to take an active role in peacebuilding, warning against divisive politics that could derail ongoing efforts. He emphasized the importance of strengthening community policing structures to foster cooperation between security agencies and residents.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who accompanied Murkomen, highlighted the tangible progress achieved through Operation Maliza Uhalifu. “Our officers’ commitment has led to safer communities, the reopening of schools, and a revival of farming and trade activities,” he noted.

In a significant policy announcement, Murkomen revealed plans to extend Operation Maliza Uhalifu to Laikipia, Samburu, Meru, and Isiolo counties. A new security base will be established in Kirimon, Laikipia North, to reinforce government efforts in combating cross-county banditry.

Also present during the assessment were Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Gilbert Masengeli, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Abdi Hassan, GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodoni, Anti-Stock Theft Unit Commandant Joseph Limo, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, and PA to the IG James Murithi.

With renewed government commitment and enhanced security operations, residents of Baringo and the wider North Rift can now look forward to a future of peace, stability, and economic recovery.
