Kenya seeks to transform transport and logistics with drone technology

1 Mins read

The Kenyan government is taking bold steps to develop its drone industry as part of a broader effort to modernize the transport and logistics sector. Transport Principal Secretary Mohammed Daghar has announced plans to restructure the country’s drone aviation regulatory framework to unlock new economic opportunities and improve efficiency.

Speaking at the inaugural Africa Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Symposium in Nairobi, PS Daghar emphasized that drones have the potential to revolutionize transport, streamline logistics, and enhance service delivery across various sectors. The event has drawn industry leaders, innovators, and stakeholders from Africa and beyond to discuss the future of drone technology and its integration into transport systems.

The government’s planned regulatory reforms will focus on streamlining drone licensing, enhancing airspace management, and creating policies that attract investment in drone technology. These efforts align with Kenya’s broader vision of leveraging technology to modernize infrastructure and spur economic growth.

“With increased global interest in drone applications, Kenya has the potential to become a regional hub for drone innovation and commercial use,” PS Daghar noted.

The symposium is expected to provide key recommendations on how African nations can collaborate to advance air mobility solutions. Experts are particularly keen on the role of drones in cargo transport, medical deliveries, and surveillance—areas where the technology has already shown significant impact worldwide.

PS Daghar reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to embracing Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) as a cornerstone of the country’s future transportation ecosystem. He emphasized the need for enabling regulations, infrastructure development, and continuous innovation while urging governments, private sector players, and academia to work together in shaping Africa’s AAM future.

The government’s efforts come at a time when drone technology is gaining traction globally, with companies and governments exploring its potential to cut costs, enhance efficiency, and provide solutions in hard-to-reach areas. Kenya’s proactive stance could position it as a leader in the region’s emerging drone economy.
