The National Police Service (NPS) today received assistive devices from the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited (Kenya Re) at a ceremony held at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus in Nairobi. The donation, worth over KSh 13 million, will support 73 officers who sustained injuries in the line of duty.

The assistive devices include wheelchairs, hearing aids, white canes, and orthopedic shoes, all customized to meet the specific needs of the recipients. This marks the second phase of the initiative, following last year’s donation by Kenya Re, which was spearheaded by Group Managing Director Dr. Hillary Wachinga.

Speaking at the event, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja expressed his gratitude to Kenya Re for their continued support. He emphasized that the assistive devices would restore mobility and independence for the affected officers. Additionally, he announced the establishment of a dedicated office at the NPS Headquarters and NPS Hospital to handle claims and support for officers with disabilities.

“Police officers face numerous occupational hazards, and it is our duty to ensure that those injured while serving the country are well cared for,” IG Koome stated. “These officers are our heroes, and they deserve every form of support to lead dignified lives.”

Dr. Wachinga reaffirmed Kenya Re’s commitment to supporting the police service, noting that security is a key pillar of economic stability. He highlighted the company’s plans to extend support beyond assistive devices to include mental health programs for officers.

“The biggest disability is not physical but mental. We recognize the difficult conditions officers work under, and we are exploring ways to support their psychological well-being,” said Dr. Wachinga.

He also encouraged officers to invest in their future by purchasing Kenya Re shares, emphasizing the benefits of financial planning for life after service.

The event was also attended by Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli and senior officials from Kenya Re.

Kenya Re has pledged to continue supporting the NPS in future initiatives, with a focus on improving officers’ quality of life and ensuring their well-being even after active service.
