Kenya celebrates first graduates of diploma in international trade
Kenya has marked a significant milestone in international trade education with the graduation of the inaugural cohort of the Diploma in International Trade program. The initiative, launched in 2022 through a collaboration between the International Trade Centre (ITC), the Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT), and the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA), aims to equip trade professionals with critical skills to navigate global markets.
The graduation ceremony, held on Friday, was attended by key stakeholders, government officials, and international trade experts. Speaking at the event, KEPROBA Chief Executive Officer Ms. Floice Mukabana emphasized the program’s role in strengthening Kenya’s trade sector by enhancing professionals’ expertise in areas such as international marketing, trade finance, and physical distribution.
“This graduation is not just about individual achievements but about the future of Kenya’s international trade. By equipping professionals with the right skills, we are ensuring that Kenyan businesses can compete effectively on the global stage,” Mukabana stated.
The diploma program is part of a broader initiative that also includes Ghana and Nigeria, reflecting Africa’s growing recognition as a trade powerhouse. The selection of Kenya for this program underscores the country’s potential as a key player in international commerce.
Dr. Grace Muriithi, Chair of KEPROBA’s Strategy Committee, highlighted the significance of the diploma in aligning with Kenya’s National Export Development Strategy. She underscored the critical role that trade professionals play in bridging the gap between policy and practice.
“This diploma is not just a certification but a powerful tool that positions graduates as key players in shaping Kenya’s trade future. The skills acquired in trade finance, marketing, and distribution will be invaluable in advancing Kenya’s trade agenda,” Dr. Muriithi noted.
Eugene Waluvengo, Africa Lead at the Chartered Institute of Export & International Trade, noted the increasing demand for specialized trade education across Africa. He emphasized the need for continuous learning and the establishment of an African alumni network to support professional growth.
“There are very few highly qualified international trade experts in Africa, yet the demand for such professionals is high. This diploma opens doors for graduates to explore opportunities both locally and internationally,” Waluvengo said.
The program has been supported by international sponsors and trainers dedicated to developing Kenya’s trade capacity. Mukabana expressed gratitude to the program’s partners for their contributions to empowering Kenyan trade professionals.
As Kenya aims to strengthen its export sector, stakeholders reiterated the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in the ever-evolving global trade landscape. Graduates were encouraged to leverage their newly acquired skills to drive policy implementation and trade facilitation in their respective institutions.
They call to action for trade professionals to embrace further learning opportunities and actively contribute to Kenya’s economic growth. KEPROBA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that build Kenya’s trade capacity, ensuring that the country remains competitive in international markets.
