Equity Group Managing Director and CEO Dr. James Mwangi, has been appointed to the esteemed Global Board of Advisors (GBA) of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), one of the premier American think tanks specializing in US foreign policy and international relations. His appointment comes as part of CFR’s ongoing commitment to enhancing international discourse and broadening global perspectives, particularly on critical issues such as Africa’s growing role in the world.
Founded in 1921, CFR is an independent, nonpartisan organization based in New York City and Washington, DC. Its membership includes influential politicians, senior officials, business leaders, academics, and media figures from around the world. The CFR Global Board of Advisors, now in its twelfth year, plays a key role in amplifying global perspectives by bringing together a diverse group of distinguished policymakers, business magnates, academics, and leaders from civil society across 25 countries. The board serves as an advisory body, providing valuable insights on regional and international issues and facilitating dialogue between U.S. leaders and their counterparts globally. CFR’s discussions and meetings regularly bring together prominent government officials, business leaders, and thought leaders to tackle pressing international challenges.
In his new role, Dr. Mwangi will be joining a select group of 33 distinguished individuals, including David M. Rubenstein, co-founder and co-chairman of The Carlyle Group; former UK Prime Minister David Cameron; Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Group; Michael Froman, CFR President; and Mo Ibrahim, founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. The board is tasked with offering advice on the strategic direction of the organization’s international outreach while fostering dialogue on the U.S. role in the world and global issues that impact every corner of the globe.
“I am honored to have been asked to join the Council on Foreign Relations Global Board of Advisors and am grateful for the chance to bring a positive African narrative to the discussions,” Dr. Mwangi remarked. “As Africa continues to rise as a significant global player, there are vast opportunities for collaboration, and I look forward to promoting a vision that fosters sustainable partnerships between Africa and the rest of the world. This platform offers the ideal space to highlight Africa’s immense potential and its contributions to global prosperity in the years ahead.”

As the CEO of Equity Group, one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, Dr. Mwangi has long been at the forefront of driving economic growth and financial inclusion across the continent. The board also includes thought leaders such as Tidjane Thiam, founder of Freedom Acquisition I Corporation, and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark, among others.
With Africa’s influence on the global stage rapidly growing, CFR’s Africa Program plays a crucial role in examining the political, economic, and security dynamics of the continent. Through initiatives such as the Africa in Transition blog and roundtable series on “Africa Strategic Opportunities,” “Political Transitions in Africa,” and “U.S. Strategic African Partners,” CFR offers unique insights into the continent’s emerging role in international relations.
Dr. Mwangi’s appointment underscores the importance of integrating African perspectives into global discussions, particularly as the continent undergoes significant economic transformations and political shifts.
