LG Electronics East Africa awards winners of the optimism your feed campaign

LG Electronics East Africa celebrated the success of its “Optimism Your Feed” campaign by awarding five winners who demonstrated creativity and positivity in their social media content. The campaign, which ran on TikTok and Instagram, aimed to foster a more optimistic environment on social media feeds by encouraging participants to share uplifting moments from their daily lives.

The initiative was inspired by an LG survey that revealed a growing need for positive content on social media. The survey highlighted that 45 percent of respondents encountered a similar or greater amount of negative content compared to positive, while 25 percent felt anxious due to the negativity in their feeds. Additionally, one in five people reported feeling unhappy as a result of consuming negative online content.

Hillary Misoi emerged as the overall winner of the challenge and was awarded the LG XBOOM Go XG9 Bluetooth speaker, valued at KES 83,995. This premium device features a 4.5-inch woofer and horn tweeter powered by Sound Boost technology, delivering 80W of immersive sound. It also boasts waterproofing and an extended battery life, making it ideal for outdoor use.

The runner-up, Joshua Mwagangi, received the LG XBOOM Go XG7, while Mary Wangari, Nelly Muthuri, and Sheryl Oluga, the joint second runners-up, each took home an LG XBOOM Go XG5. These portable speakers are equipped with waterproof and dust-resistant technology, customizable flashing LED lights, and long-lasting battery performance, with the XG5 offering 18 hours of playtime.

John Gitau, LG Electronics EA Audio Visual Product Manager, commended the winners for their outstanding contributions. He emphasized the importance of the campaign in promoting optimism on social media timelines.

“The LG Optimism Your Feed Campaign is part of LG’s Life’s Good global mission to encourage mindfulness about the impact of social media activity on content consumers. As a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to driving the creation of content that trains social media algorithms to prioritize positivity. Our winners have truly embraced and advanced this mission,” Gitau stated.

The Optimism Your Feed campaign was launched globally in May, featuring a curated playlist developed in collaboration with renowned global influencers such as Tina Choi, Victoria Browne, and Josh Harmon. The playlist included over 20 short-form videos designed to inspire and motivate viewers with feel-good content.

To strengthen the campaign’s foundation, LG collaborated with social media experts, including Professor Casey Fiesler, an information scientist and technology ethicist. Fiesler underscored the importance of understanding the influence of social media algorithms on user experiences.

“Recommendation algorithms predict what content we are likely to engage with, often leading users into specific niches that can either uplift or harm. Improving digital literacy and consciously engaging with positive content can significantly influence what we see online, encouraging a healthier and more balanced experience,” she explained.

The campaign’s success highlights the potential for individuals and corporations to positively influence digital ecosystems. By promoting optimism and awareness, LG has demonstrated its commitment to creating a better online environment for users worldwide.

The winners’ contributions, along with the campaign’s global reach and expert input, signify an important step towards shaping social media platforms as spaces of positivity, balance, and happiness.
