Tatu City, a trailblazing urban development, has set a new benchmark for road safety and community wellness in Kenya. By combining cutting-edge technology, innovative urban design, and strict traffic management, Tatu City is reshaping urban living in East Africa.

In partnership with businesses, residents, and the local community, Tatu City has introduced groundbreaking safety measures, making its roads among the safest in Africa. Equipped with bodycams for transparency, dozens of traffic marshals—trained and hired from the local community—patrol the city on motorcycles and e-bikes, ensuring adherence to speed limits and enforcing rules against littering and other offenses.

“Kenya’s roads are among the most dangerous in the world,” noted Martin Kiarie, Tatu City’s Operations Manager. “Within Tatu City, we’ve created a safe haven where rules are respected, and families, employees, and visitors can enjoy peace of mind.”

Beyond strict traffic controls, Tatu City’s Contractors Code of Conduct oversees 175 construction sites, with no serious injuries reported in 2024. These efforts are bolstered by the Master Declaration of Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions, which enforces city-wide policies, including speed limits and safety fines, ensuring a rules-based environment.

A standout feature of Tatu City’s road safety initiative is its vibrant pedestrian crossings, designed by Urban Designer Peter Omondi. Inspired by African patterns, these crossings seamlessly blend culture and modernity while prioritizing pedestrian safety. “Our designs celebrate African heritage and prove that safety can be creative and engaging,” Omondi remarked.

Safety isn’t the only area where Tatu City shines. The city is equally committed to promoting health and active lifestyles. Highlights include an outdoor gym at City Park—the largest in Kenya—featuring cutting-edge equipment like sky steppers, rowers, and health walkers. Open to the public, this family-friendly facility fosters community fitness.

Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a 5-a-side football pitch, a full-sized basketball court, and over 100 kilometers of interconnected walkways, cycling paths, and nature trails, all connected by The Green Link, a sustainable network of green spaces and recreational hubs.

Tatu City is emerging as a regional hub for sporting events. This year, it hosted Kiambu County’s largest running event, attracting over 5,000 participants. On 1 February 2025, the city will once again host the Loop Safari Race Series, cementing its status as a premier venue for health and wellness activities.

Currently home to 26,400 residents, workers, and students, Tatu City’s population is set to reach 250,000 upon full completion. The development boasts 88 businesses, including global investors and local enterprises. Among recent investments is a KES 2.8 billion medical oxygen plant by Hewatele, supported by U.S., Canadian, Finnish, and Danish governments, as well as the Soros Economic Development Fund.

Tatu City is not just a city; it’s a vision of what urban living can achieve when safety, innovation, and community well-being take center stage. As Kenya looks to the future, Tatu City stands as a beacon of progress and possibility.
